Is Portuguese Import tax expensive?

Import tax is required by Portuguese law if your package is above a certain threshold set by the European authorities.

This threshold comes to 22 Euros in all European countries, which is a small amount so as to benefit more trade between European countries.

Nevertheless, make sure you check the requirements and the threshold before you ship to avoid any unwanted surprises.

Please consult with our agents if you have any questions about this.

What items are prohibited from being imported to Portugal from China?

For your China to Portugal shipping, you need to be aware of what can and cannot be sent.

Making sure you are aware of this prevents any shocks in the future. Please consult our website and if you are not sure then please contact our agents.

It???s better to be safe than sorry.

When it comes to prohibited items you need to consider both the rules of the shipping company and the laws of the countries your goods will be travelling through, especially the ports of departure and arrival.

Remember, if you are in doubt about whether your package is safe or legal to ship, then make sure you consult with one of our expert staff.

It will cost a lot of money in the long run if you organise a shipping strategy only to find out that the item you want to ship is prohibited.

Do not try to subvert the rules as all parcels are scanned before shipping and if you are found to be trying to ship prohibited items, the package will be returned to you at your own expense. Some of the goods that are prohibited are:

  • Liquid, powder and paste (liquid cosmetics, toothpaste, capsule drugs,???)
  • Batteries and electronic products with batteries (mobile phones, computers???)
  • Magnetic goods (speakers, products with strong magnetic fields???)
  • Weapons?? (hand weapons, imitation and ammunition)
  • Some categories of products (adult products, drones, electronic cigarettes???)
  • Hazardous goods (compressed gas products, erosive, toxic gas, flammable materials)
  • Documents (currencies or falsified documents)
  • Perishable products (food, plants, all live animals except properly packaged bees, silkworms and leeches)

What are the differences in means of transportation when shipping from China to Portugal?

When you are deciding on your import strategy the mode of transportation is probably the biggest decision you need to make.

However, depending on the size and quantity of the goods you are shipping, as well as the frequency of imports, a certain means of transport may present themselves as the obvious option when it comes to saving money and time.

You will need to consider the expected costs of transportation as well as the timeframe you are working to.

If your business depends on urgent transportation then certain means of transport make a lot more sense than others.

Other things to consider are the weight of the goods and the type of goods being transported. All these factors need to be weighed up when you are deciding which means of transport to ship your goods.

Express delivery from China to Portugal

Express delivery is probably the quickest and simplest way of transporting your goods from China to Portugal.

Companies such as FedEx, UPS, and DHL are some of the most well-known express delivery services although there are many more.

This is a fast way to get goods across the world and can be expected to take around 3-7 business days to ship.

Express delivery services handle all the documentation and cross-border bureaucracy themselves and so, as a customer, you won???t need to worry about filling in lengthy forms or learning new regulations, etc.

Most of the time, it???s as simple as making the order with the company and then waiting for your delivery to arrive at your address.

Express delivery also means that your goods are less likely to be lost or damaged as they pass through fewer cargo-handling stages than other transportation options.

This quick and simple service comes with a high price, however.

Express companies can also raise prices at key times throughout the year, such as seasonal holidays and times when there is a lot of cross-border traffic.

If you have a relationship with a freight forwarder, then they may be able to secure you a discounted rate at certain times of the year as good freight forwarders will have built up a relationship with express companies that means that any benefits can be passed on to their clients.

Sea shipping from China to Portugal

China has developed a number of high traffic ports that serve the world in terms of goods. Some of the most well-known and busiest ports include Shanghai port, Ningbo port, Shenzhen port, Tianjin port, Qingdao port, Xiamen port, and Hong Kong.

When selecting a forwarder, it pays to see whether they have an office in these cities, as this is likely to make the shipping process much more smooth if the forwarder has local knowledge about the port procedures when it comes to handling and loading your cargo.

You can transport your goods by both FCL and LCL shipping. There are many factors you need to consider when shipping from China to Portugal.

A standard 40 foot container can accommodate 22 standard pallets, with a 20 foot container holding 10 pallets.

If you???re shipping large volumes and can fill a container, it makes sense to choose FCL (Full Container Load).

The other advantage of Full Container Load is that your items are kept separate from other importers.

On the other hand, LCL (Less than a Container Load) refers to shipping where your goods share space within a container with other goods.

If you???re okay with that, then LCL shipping (also known as groupage) offers a more economical way to ship smaller quantities that make up less than half of the volume of a full container.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR LCL FREIGHT SHIPPING

LCL shipping means your goods will share space with goods from other companies.

This also means that your delivery might take a little bit longer, because of both the packing and unpacking process.

Before departure, your goods will be stored in a consolidation warehouse in China until departure, and then on arrival be held in a de-consolidation warehouse in Portugal before they are delivered to your address.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR FCL FREIGHT SHIPPING

FCL shipping means renting an entire container for your shipment.

If you have a large enough cargo to occupy a container, or even most of a container, FCL shipping may make the most economical sense.

It???s also quicker than LCL shipping as there is no need to consolidate or deconsolidate your items from others.

Your container will also remain sealed throughout the journey and unless customs officials select it for inspection it will be sealed until it arrives at your address or chosen destination.

Container models are mainly divided into three different categories:

  • 1 CBM=1 cubic meter
  • Full container load 20???GP 40???GP 40???HQ
  • CBM contained 28CBM 58CBM 68CBM

Air freight from China to Portugal

While most goods are transported by sea, of all your transport options, air freight is without a doubt the quickest option. However, be aware that speed comes with a price and air freight can be costly too.

On the other hand, if you are shipping small goods or if quick shipping is a premium part of your business that adds value then air freight may still be a valid economical option.

If you have any queries or would like to discuss this further, then feel free to send us a message and our expert customer service team will get in contact to discuss your options and find a solution that works for you.

Air freight also makes sense for high value goods or certain types of electronic goods that could get damaged on a sea route.

Highly perishable goods that have a short life span, such as food and some medicines are also goods that are transported by air.

However, as well as the expensive price of air freight, it also has limitations when it comes to size and weight of products.

Be sure to check with your freight forwarding team about whether your goods can be transported by air.

While the time spent in the air is only a matter of hours, air transport of goods between China and Portugal can take around 3-15 days.

This is because there are many steps to shipping goods, from the factory to your business address.

Your freight forwarder should be able to advise you on the best choice for you.

For a time sensitive delivery try the more expensive but quicker service that will take only around 3-7 days.

Saving Money

After you have chosen your method of transportation there are some other calibrations of shipping to consider.

Being aware of the different choices and knowing how cargo moves along the supply chain will give you some insight into the next step.

??

Some terms to understand: FOB, EXW, CIF, and DAP

If you are purchasing from a commerce site such as alibaba.com or your supplier is shipping directly to you, there are a few terms they will refer you to: FOB, EXW, CIF, and DAP.

FOB stands for Free on Board and is used to indicate the liability for any goods that are damaged or destroyed during transit. On sites like Alibaba, FOB is the primary mode of shipping, which means that your supplier in Chinese will be responsible for transportation from the factory to the port where it will be loaded as cargo.

Following that step, you will be responsible for the next two steps the freight takes which are: from the Chinese airport or seaport to the Portuguese airport/seaport; from the Portuguese airport/seaport to your business or receiving address.

??EXW stands for Ex-Works is a term used in international trade to designate a situation where the buyer is responsible for the cost of transport from a designated location where the seller has made it available.

In terms of shipping from China, EXW means that the buyer is responsible for the shipping costs and transportation from the factory/sales point to the port in China.

This means that you essentially have to cover three steps; from the factory to the port: from the Chinese port to the Portuguese port;from the Portuguese port to your address. In these cases, a Chinese freight forwarding company can help you immensely.

CIF stands for Cost, Insurance, and Freight and is paid by the supplier to cover against the risk of damage while the goods are in transit to their destination port, for example from a Chinese factory all the way to the port in Portugal.

Therefore under a CIF arrangement the buyer is responsible only for transport from the domestic port to the business address.

While a CIF arrangement can remove some of the hassle from the shipping process, they can be more expensive than alternatives.

Your supplier will likely be using a freight forwarder of their own in these arrangements.

Thus you might want to consider whether it could be a better business strategy to simply invest in your own freight forwarding partner who will take care of the logistics at what will likely be a cheaper price than paying for the CIF arrangement.

DAP stands for Delivered at Place and this, as the name suggests, means a trading arrangement where the supplier agrees to take care of all the steps in the shipping process, from their point of supply all the way to your business address.

In this step the seller pays all the fees and customs, etc and is also responsible for any losses during the transit. While this is probably the most simple way to order products it also has some disadvantages.

Firstly the cost is likely to be much more than other arrangements.

Secondly, in comparison to using a freight forwarder to handle your shipping, the supplier might not have the capacity to do much of the work such as warehousing your goods, making sure they have the correct labels, providing real time tracking and customer service and knowing how to handle a goods inspection.

??We recommend using FOB and EXW services when shipping from China to Portugal in conjunction with a freight forwarder that will handle the shipping process professionally and save you time and money in the process.

What is the role of a freight forwarder and why do you need one when shipping from China to Portugal?

Freight forwarders are companies that act to help with the transportation of goods across the world and act on behalf of the shipping/importing company.

Freight forwarders bring a wealth of experience in this role and make it their mission to ensure that your goods arrive at their destination with the least amount of hassle for you.

Freight forwarders offer services such as the preparation of importing and exporting documents, bringing your goods from the factory to the export port, managing transportation from port to door, booking necessary cargo space for your goods, managing the consolidation of your freight for its journey, storing your goods before they travel (warehousing), negotiation of the best rates for freight charges, handling insurance, including filing for claims, and generally giving advice and strategizing with clients who are importing and exporting.

Shipping from A to B can be a complex process and there is a lot going on behind the scenes to make it work and ensure that it passes the relevant country laws.

Your freight forwarder does almost everything, however, be aware that freight forwarders are not the transporters of the freight for its major leg (e.g. plane, ship, train).

Freight forwarders transport goods from one place to another and have the experience with each step of the way to ensure that your products are loaded and unloaded onto the transport with minimal delays for your business.

Freight forwarders are the intermediaries between the company importing and the transporting companies.

Of course, you could do it yourself, but such a process would require not only learning the intricacies of the logistical and bureaucratic process, but also require taking on more staff to make it work.

By choosing a freight forwarder, you engage and work with experienced agents who bring their knowledge to make sure your goods arrive on time at the best possible price.

Navigating the waters of customs documentation as well as arranging for your goods to be transported in the most cost and time-efficient way can be a daunting task for importers.

That???s why it makes financial sense to utilise the services of a freight forwarder, who will not only take care of the details but also bring their wealth of knowledge and contacts to negotiate the best deals for your transportation needs.

If you???re transporting goods from China to Portugal, then choosing the right freight forwarder can make a huge difference to the success of your business. You???ll save not only money but time as well, which can be just as important to businesses.

Freight forwarders make it their job to be familiar with the ins and outs and the fine print of importing laws and regulations. Of course, each country has different regulations and expected standards when it comes to importing.

By using a freight forwarding service, you save yourself the hassle of having to learn all the different contexts and required documentation.

That???s the freight forwarder???s job and they???ll be able to make sure your goods??? journey is as smooth as possible while you can devote your time to better serving your bottom line elsewhere.

Freight forwarders make a lot of sense for businesses of all sizes, especially when importing is key to the business and when a company’s own staff aren???t trained in the international procedures when it comes to shipping.

??

If I???m shipping from China to Portugal, do I need a freight forwarder?

If the goods you are importing come from China, then choosing a freight forwarder that has familiarity with China is important.

The process of importing means that you need to take into consideration things such as storage of your goods at each step towards the main transportation (e.g. which warehouse they will be stored in before they are loaded into the cargo area of the transport).

While using a forwarder based in Portugal may appear to be easier, if you use a company based in China, then the process becomes a lot more smoother as there will be no need for translation or complex negotiations when it comes to the forwarding process.

A Chinese freight forwarding company brings local and contextual knowledge that cannot be replicated.

This involved not only knowledge of the language and bureaucracy, but cultural and seasonal knowledge that can make a difference to your shipping strategies.

Therefore, choosing a Chinese freight forwarder can make a lot of sense when it comes to both time and money.

??

How reliable is a freight forwarder?

There are many freight forwarding companies that will compete for your business.

For this reason and for the security of your business you need to ensure you choose the right one.

Therefore it is imperative to establish some criteria when making your choice about the best logistics company to handle your freight forwarding needs. What follows are some of the things to consider in this case.

  1. Companies that do freight forwarding should be experienced and organised when it comes to the documentation process of shipping goods from one place to another. The best forwarders know that mistakes in this department not only hold up shipping times, but cost businesses money. Therefore it is important to choose a freight forwarding company that takes documentation seriously and is well-organised in this regards.
  2. The best freight forwarding companies also ensure that your goods meet the standards of shipping by providing a packing service. Whether your goods are travelling by land, sea or air, you need to make sure they are protected from damage and the elements. Your freight forwarding company should offer you a service that ensures your products will be safe. This is especially important when it comes to packing fragile goods. Furthermore, packing goods correctly is not just for their own good, but country importing and exporting regulations means that packing goods is something that needs to be done in a correct manner with accurate and necessary labelling. Your freight forwarding company should be able to pack your goods and advise you on how best to transport them to make sure they pass through customs smoothly.
  3. The best freight forwarders will also be connected to a strong network of customs brokers and shipping agents worldwide. This means that getting from A to B can be done much more quickly and smoothly and makes sense when it comes to getting the best value service.
  4. Information is crucial and freight forwarders should offer a service that allows you to track the location of your goods while they are on the move. It will help your peace of mind to have a tracking service available to see where your items are along their journey. This also helps businesses who need to make estimates about arrival time so as to best coordinate their business strategies in their home country. Furthermore, freight forwarders should offer lines of communication that allow for their clients to get in contact with staff at any time in case any problems arise, or there is a need to negotiate new terms of a contract.
  5. Freight forwarders should also be able to offer a good insurance plan. It???s unlikely that things will go wrong, but it pays to be protected in the event they do. Freight forwarders should have experience in this area and be able to offer you the best deal when it comes to insurance for damaged or lost goods or an alteration to a shipping schedule.

When shipping from China to Portugal it may help to have these questions in mind.

  • Does the freight forwarding company have a business licence from the Chinese government?
  • Is there an official website for the company that is highly placed on Google?
  • Is the company able to offer efficient and professional advice and explanations during a consultation?
  • Can the company offer a cargo tracking system that allows you to see your goods in real time?
  • Can the company provide an example of a bill or lading?

It can also help to work with a company to import small quantities first to assess whether they will be a good partner for larger quantities in the future.

??

Rules for Size and Weight

It???s not just the price of transport you need to pay attention to, but also the size and the weight of your packages. Express and air delivery in particular can be very expensive when it comes to these factors.

Weight is normally calculated in kilograms (kg) and volume is calculated in cubic metres (CBM).

Whether your cargo is charged according to weight or size depends on its ???dimensional weight??? and whether the volume is greater than the weight in this regard.

For example, shipping a 100m x 100m x 100m piece of foam that weighs 20kg may be light, but the size of the item means that we are more likely to be charging according to the volume.

The dimensional weight varies according to method of transport but for example in Express delivery it is the volume in CM divided by 5000 so in terms of the piece of foam it would be: 100 x 100 x 100 divided by 5000 which equals 200kg dimensional weight.

For regular airfreight, the volume is divided by 6000 which would be 167kg of kilograms of dimensional weight.

In these cases the dimensional weight is much higher than the ???regular??? weight and it is the dimensional weight that will be charged.

Note that the exact calculations may change over time so you need to check with your freight forwarder about this calculation.

On the other hand, if the weight is more than the dimensional weight, for example if you are shipping something very dense, then it is the weight that will be charged.

In short, if you are shipping something large and bulky then it is likely that it will be charged according to the size not the weight.

??

Shipping at the right time.

While some businesses require a steady stream of goods being imported, for others the timing of deliveries can be an important component of your business??? shipping strategy.

If shipping is time-sensitive, then you might be restricted when it comes to options, but if you have plenty of time when it comes to shipping goods, then your options widen and you may be able to find a more economical deal even if it takes more time to arrive at your destination.

Taking into account cultural events is also important when shipping from China to Portugal, especially the Chinese holiday calendar.

Around the holidays, the price of transport will increase due to less availability of workers and some factories will even be closed.

Key times in China to take into account are, During the ???primetime??? from early September to early October; the first month of the Chinese New Year, based on the lunar calendar and normally around January or February.

Logistics partners

Logistics partners such as freight forwarders can help you get the best possible price for your goods and guide you to the best shipping strategy for your company.

??If your logistics partner has multiple choices when it comes to carriers, then this will increase your chances of getting the best possible deal for your shipping as they will be able to find alternatives and the best option for your business.

??

If you can ship with FCL it makes sense

LCL is when you ship your goods by sharing a container with other merchants. While this makes sense if you only have a small amount of goods, it can lead to some extra costs.

For example, LCL shipping has to go through the process of collating and separating out the cargo before it leaves and after it arrives at ports. This can take time and there may even be additional fees for this.

Therefore even if you don???t have enough goods to completely fill a container it can still make more sense to use FCL. Consult with your freight forwarder about this to see what they recommend.

??Consolidation

If you???re buying from many different suppliers in small quantities then consolidation may make a lot of business sense for you. This is a service that your freight forwarder can offer you that individual suppliers usually cannot.

By consolidating all your orders into one you may be able to have enough goods to make FCL shipping feasible in terms of cost. Freight forwarders will be able to provide such a service to you.

They may be able to provide a system whereby they transport goods from one origin to the place where the most cargo is so as to consolidate it all together.

Of course you might have to pay extra for the transport within China, but given the advantages of FCL in both cost and time it may prove economical to do this overall.

??

Hybrid Solutions?

It may be possible and make business sense to ship your goods in a variety of ways, such as air, ship and ground transport. While this may sound costly and complicated, multi modal transport options could save you time and money.

Freight forwarders with experience will be able to guide you into methods that make the most sense for you and with their knowledge and experience, will be able to handle any complexities, after all this is their job!

International transport has a lot of different steps and hoops to jump through, but by working with a freight forwarder you can help make this a simple move from A to B.

Therefore for your business and your own peace of mind it???s important to choose a freight forwarder than you can trust and that will consult with you on each step of the way.
