SEA FREIGHT & AIR CARGO SHIPPING FROM CHINA TO COLOMBIA

China is often called the new workshop of the world and this is because it has become a huge exporter of goods in many different industries and fields.

The China to Columbia route is no exception to this. In 2019, sales from exports from China to Columbia totalled around USD 9 billion.

Some of the most popular products and commodities being imported to Columbia from Columbia are manufactured items like vehicles (cars, buses and trucks) and household goods, electronics and solar powered objects and LEDS.

Raw materials such as oil, gas, and aluminum are also popular. So too are industrial goods for companies, such as medical and farming equipment and heavy machinery, and factory equipment for food processing.

These goods can be transported from China to Columbia by a variety of different methods.

Air freight and ocean shipping are the two dominant methods.

There are many choices when it comes to picking the right company to handle your goods so make sure that you choose a logistics provider that offers a breadth of knowledge and experience and is able to communicate well when it comes to meeting your needs.

Sea Freight & Container Shipping From China To Colombia

When it comes to shipping, sea freight is one of the most popular means of transport in the world. Although it???s obviously slower than air freight, shipping by ocean container ships can be incredibly economic for your business.

Our service can help get your products from all major ports in China such as Shanghai, Ningbo, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Tianjin, Qingdao, Dalian, Xiamen, and Hong-Kong.

With a door-to-door service we take care of your goods from the factory/retailer all the way to your address in Columbia.

We can pick your goods up at Columbia???s ports such as Buenaventura, Cartagena, and Barranquilla.

And on arrival, you can have your goods delivered to many inland cities such as Bogota, Cali, Bucaramanga, Medellin and others.

The transit time to ship a container from China to Colombia is estimated between 20 to 30 days from port to port.

The estimated time that it takes goods to ship between China and Columbia is around 20 to 30 days. This will vary according to routes, time of year and schedules.

Types of Containers for shipping from China to Colombia

There are three main types of container when shipping by ocean from China to Columbia:

20???GP = 20???DV = 20FT = 20??? = 20 feet ( for general purpose to Colombia).

This is for bulky, large goods. For instance, rocks and minerals or heavy machinery.

40???GP = 40???DV = 40FT = 40??? = 40 feet (for general purpose from China)

This is for large, but not ultra-heavy cargo. So this container is suitable for goods such as furniture, tires, consumer goods, etc,

40???HC = 40???HQ = 40 feet high cube for shipping from china to Colombia

General purpose containers usually refer to Dry Containers, also known as DC.

Occasionally fluid goods can be transported by DC as long as they are packed appropriately.

For irregular cargo that won???t fit into regular containers there are some special options available such as Open Top Containers, Reefer Containers, Flat-Rack Containers, Tank Containers, and so on.

We???ll be happy to consult with you on the container that best suits your needs.

FCL and LCL shipping

??You can transport your goods by both FCL and LCL shipping. There are many factors you need to consider when shipping from China to Columbia.

A standard 40 foot container can accommodate 22 standard pallets, with a 20 foot container holding 10 pallets. If you???re shipping large volumes and can fill a container, it makes sense to choose FCL (Full Container Load).

The other advantage of Full container load is that your items are kept separate from other importers.

On the other hand, LCL (Less than a Container Load) refers to shipping where your goods share space within a container with other goods.

If you???re OK with that, then LCL shipping (also known as groupage) offers a more economical way to ship smaller quantities that make up less than half of the volume of a full container.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR LCL FREIGHT SHIPPING

LCL shipping means your goods will share space with goods from other companies.

This also means that your delivery might take a little bit longer, because of both the packing and unpacking process.

Before departure, your goods will be stored in a consolidation warehouse in China until departure, and then on arrival be held in a de-consolidation warehouse in Columbia before they are delivered to your address.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR FCL FREIGHT SHIPPING

FCL shipping means renting an entire container for your shipment. If you have a large enough cargo to occupy a container, or even most of a container, FCL shipping may make the most economical sense.

It???s also quicker than LCL shipping as there is no need to consolidate or deconsolidate your items from others.

Your container will also remain sealed throughout the journey and unless customs officials select it for inspection it will be sealed until it arrives at your address or chosen destination.

What are the Advantages of air freight from China to Colombia?

Air freight is the quickest way to transport your goods from China to Columbia, but of course there are positives and negatives when it comes to this means of transportation.

Apart from the obvious advantage of speed, Air freight also offers reliability when it comes to arrivals and departures.

Planes have a schedule to keep and it???s rare that these schedules change dramatically.

So when you order transport by plane, you can have a very clear idea of when your package will depart and arrive at each airport. This can be crucial if you???re a business that relies on precise timing.

Another good reason is the flexibility of where you ship from.

With air freight, you can ship from almost anywhere in China. So while air freight can be more expensive on a weight and size basis, by eliminating the extra travel costs to a sea port, it could be economical for your business.

Similarly, because air freight takes less time than other methods, the insurance premiums for the goods in transit could be a lot less, saving you money in this way.

Insurance is also lower in general because air freight tends to be more secure than other methods. Air ports are some of the most secure places in the world, meaning that it???s less likely your goods will be tampered with.

Furthermore, because of the speed of transport there are less opportunities for your goods to be damaged in transit.

Transporting goods by air also means that you???ll probably have less requirements for local warehousing and stock consolidation.

With the faster times associated with air freight, your goods can go straight to the airport rather than waiting in warehouses to be consolidated into containers.

Air freight also requires less packaging than sea freight. You won???t have to worry about containers.

As you can see, while air freight remains the most expensive option on a per weight basis, there are numerous economic savings to be made through this method which could add up in the long run.

Warehousing and Storing your Freight

We offer a warehousing service for all your logistic needs.

When transporting goods you might want to temporarily store them in a warehouse, especially if you are sourcing your cargo from many different outlets.

Warehousing means you can collect and consolidate your goods which can save you money in the long run, especially if it means you can collect enough to make a full container economically viable.

Our facilities provide all the standard services when it comes to warehouse logistics such as loading, unloading, crating, palletizing, and temporary storage.

Customs clearance

Navigating the waters of customs documentation as well as arranging for your goods to be transported in the most cost and time-efficient way can be a daunting task for importers.

That???s why it makes financial sense to utilise the services of a freight forwarder, who will not only take care of the details but also bring their wealth of knowledge and contacts to negotiate the best deals for your transportation needs.

If you???re transporting goods from China to Columbia, then choosing the right freight forwarder can make a huge difference to the success of your business.

You???ll save not only money but time as well, which can be just as important to businesses.

We make it our business to be familiar with the ins and outs and the fine print of importing laws and regulations. Of course, each country has different regulations and expected standards when it comes to importing.

By using a freight forwarding service, you save yourself the hassle of having to learn all the different contexts and required documentation.

That???s our job and we???ll be able to make sure your goods??? journey is as smooth as possible while you can devote your time to better serving your bottom line elsewhere.

Should I choose EXW or FOB when shipping from China to Colombia?

The difference between FOB and EXW is whether the retailer is responsible for the transport to the Chinese port (FOB) or that becomes your responsibility.

If you lack experience or you???re dealing with certain types of goods that could have trouble clearing customs (for instance wooden furniture), then FOB might be a better option for you.

However, if you are transporting small goods with little weight, then EXW could be the best and most economical option in these cases.

If in doubt about a seller’s estimate for delivery pricing within China, then contact us and we can assess for you whether it makes economic sense.

We have years of experience in this industry and we know how to calibrate your business??? logistics so you are always shipping goods in the way that makes sense.

Don???t forget that our local knowledge of China makes us the perfect forwarding agency for people shipping goods from China to Columbia.

If you???re in any doubt about the best option then don???t hesitate to get in touch.

Shipping Terms from China to Colombia ??? EXW/FOB/CIF/DAP

After you have chosen your method of transportation there are some other calibrations of shipping to consider.

Being aware of the different choices and knowing how cargo moves along the supply chain will give you some insight into the next step.

Some terms to understand: FOB, EXW, CIF, and DAP

If you are purchasing from a commerce site such as alibaba.com or your supplier is shipping directly to you, there are a few terms they will refer you to: FOB, EXW, CIF, and DAP.

FOB stands for Free on Board and is used to indicate the liability for any goods that are damaged or destroyed during transit. On sites like Alibaba, FOB is the primary mode of shipping, which means that your supplier in China will be responsible for transportation from the factory to the port where it will be loaded as cargo.

Following that step, you will be responsible for the next two steps the freight takes which are: from the Chinese airport or seaport to the Columbian airport/seaport; from the Columbia airport/seaport to your business or receiving address.

EXW stands for Ex-Works is a term used in international trade to designate a situation where the buyer is responsible for the cost of transport from a designated location where the seller has made it available. In terms of shipping from China, EXW means that the buyer is responsible for the shipping costs and transportation from the factory/sales point to the port in China.

This means that you essentially have to cover three steps; from the factory to the port: from the Chinese port to the Columbian port;from the Columbian port to your address. In these cases, a Chinese freight forwarding company can help you immensely.

CIF stands for Cost, Insurance, and Freight and is paid by the supplier to cover against the risk of damage while the goods are in transit to their destination port, for example from a Chinese factory all the way to the port in Columbia. Therefore under a CIF arrangement the buyer is responsible only for transport from the domestic port to the business address.

While a CIF arrangement can remove some of the hassle from the shipping process, they can be more expensive than alternatives.

Your supplier will likely be using a freight forwarder of their own in these arrangements.

Thus you might want to consider whether it could be a better business strategy to simply invest in your own freight forwarding partner who will take care of the logistics at what will likely be a cheaper price than paying for the CIF arrangement.

DAP stands for Delivered at Place and this, as the name suggests, means a trading arrangement where the supplier agrees to take care of all the steps in the shipping process, from their point of supply all the way to your business address.

In this step the seller pays all the fees and customs, etc and is also responsible for any losses during the transit.

While this is probably the most simply way to order products it also has some downfalls.

Firstly the cost is likely to be much more than other arrangements. Secondly, in comparison to using a freight forwarder to handle your shipping, the supplier might not have the capacity to do much of the work such as warehousing your goods, making sure they have the correct labels, providing real time tracking and customer service and knowing how to handle a goods inspection.

Regulations of Colombian Customs

When you???re exporting to Columbia from China it will be necessary to make an agreement with a Customs Agency in Columbia to receive the cargo and clear it through customs in Columbia.

This process has a few steps:

You will need to fill out the ???Andean Custom Value Declaration??? if the value of the goods you are importing is more than USD5000 in a FOB shipment.

You will also need to fill out an import declaration from China to Columbia if the value is over USD 1000.

Your customs broker in Columbia should be responsible for making sure all the paperwork is in order and clear the shipment as it passes through Columbian customs. You will then need to pay the correct Import Duties, surcharges, VAT, and any other fees required for the shipment.

Also make sure that you can show any necessary documents for shipping from China to Columbia. These documents should be kept by the importer for at least five years.

What documents do you need?

You will need a commercial invoice, which has detailed information about the goods you are importing and must show the buyer and seller as well as the details of the sale.

You will also need a packing list, which will be used by customs to check the cargo freight and should define the type of package. Remember this is not a substitute for the commercial invoice.

You also need a bill of lading (BOL) which is the document used by the carrier to confirm their receipt of goods.

This is essential if you need to claim insurance and also helps when tracking goods.
