Air Freight From China: When Speed Matters
China ForwardersMarch 18, 20265 min read
When to Use Air Freight
Air freight makes sense when your goods are time-sensitive, high-value, lightweight, or needed urgently. Typical transit from China to the US or Europe is 3–7 days door-to-door.
Cost Structure
Air freight is priced by chargeable weight — the greater of actual weight or volumetric weight (L × W × H ÷ 6000 in cm). Rates vary by lane, season, and volume. Expect $3–8 per kg for standard cargo.
Major Air Cargo Hubs in China
- Shanghai Pudong (PVG) — China's busiest cargo airport
- Guangzhou Baiyun (CAN) — Hub for South China manufacturing
- Shenzhen Bao'an (SZX) — Electronics and tech exports
- Hong Kong (HKG) — Major transshipment hub
- Beijing Daxing (PKX) — Growing North China hub
Documentation
Air shipments require an Air Waybill (AWB) instead of a Bill of Lading. Other documents are similar: commercial invoice, packing list, and any certificates.
Limitations
Some goods cannot fly — batteries, flammable liquids, and certain chemicals have restrictions. Oversized cargo may need special arrangements. Always check with your forwarder.
